BULOVA

The Bulova watchmaking company was established in 1875 by Joseph Bulova.  Bulova immigrated from Bohemia to New York, where he went on to establish his watchmaking corporation.  Bulova watches originated in Woodside and Flushing, New York, where Joseph Bulova toiled to create luxurious and stylish timepieces.  Not only did Bulova become a very successful watchmaking company, the company has also contributed to the watchmaking world through the invention of several tools and devices.

The first line of Bulova watches designed specifically for women appeared in 1924 and included several pieces that were accented with diamonds.  Just a few years later, in 1928, the Bulova watch company was responsible for introducing the world’s first clock radio.  In 1931, Bulova was responsible for manufacturing the first electric clocks to be available on the market.

Bulova was responsible for inventing the Accutron watch, which regulated the time keeping of the piece through the use of resonating tuning forks.  These Bulova Accutron watches were first sold in October of 1960 and used a hertz tuning fork to drive the mechanical gear train.  This technology was the work of Max Hentzel, a Swiss engineer who was invaluable to the Bulova company.  Not only did he invent the Accutron technology, he also was the first to use an electronic device (a transistor) in a wrist watch.  In the years that followed, 4 million of these special Bulova watches were distributed.  The company became part of the Loews Corporation in 1979 and then was purchased in 2007 by the Citizen Watch Co.  Interestingly, the Bulova watch company was also the subject of the very first television commercial, which aired in 1941.  During that year, Bulova paid $9 for a 10-second advertising slot on WNBT (in New York) that aired during a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Bulova Collection

The Bulova watch collection offers watches for both men and women in several different styles.  Many of these styles of Bulova watches are available for both men and women.  One example of this is the 14K Gold collection.  There are square and rectangular faces that are offered with bands and trim made of sold gold.  There are also Bulova watches that are from the company’s Diamond collection.  Again, these watches are available for both men and women.  The Diamond Bulova watches are available with a rectangular and circular face.  Other styles of Bulova watches that are available for men and women include Bracelets, Crystal, Emeritus, and Marine Star.  There are also models that are available specifically for men or specifically women.  The Bangle is a watch that is marketed specifically to ladies.  On the other side, the Millenia is offered primarily to men.
